William Shakespeare's plays seem to be the most popular literary works adapted by film directors, with Romeo and Juliet as the most screened. Other popular literary works are classics like works by Charles Dickens, Thomas Hardy. E.M. Forester, Victor Hugo, Colette, Joseph Conrad, Henry James, Jane Austen, Emily Bronte, Tom Jones etc. Other works make use of new publications by successful new authors, especially if they have been awarded by the literary world. It also follows that if such an adaptation is successful then the same filmmaker or another filmmaker will make use of the given author's other publications. Ron Howard's Da Vinci Code 2006 based on Dan Brown's book of the same names was followed up by Ron Howard's "Angels and Demons" an adaptation of another Dan Brown book. This obvious marketing trend can be traced throughout the various James Bond, Sherlock Holmes, Agata Christie, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings film productions.

Although Critics and polls seem to be divided there seems to be certain quiescence with regards to some adaptations. The following productions can be found in all these polls and they appear here in no particular order.
